Eighty-five percent of Americans plan to travel this summer, according to the “Summer Travel Survey & Trends 2023” report by The Vacationer. Nearly half of them (42 percent of all Americans) are planning to travel more this summer compared to last. The 85 percent who intend to travel this summer represent a 5 percent increase over 2022.

As for who’s traveling, American adults over 60 years old are the least likely to have intentions of traveling this summer (Only 74 percent of people over the age of 60 intend to travel). That said, 90 percent of American adults aged 30 to 44 intend to travel this summer. Similar rates of those aged 45 to 60 (88 percent) and 18 to 29 (87 percent) have intentions to travel this summer.

Women are slightly more likely than men to say they intend to travel more this summer than last summer: 43 percent said they intend to travel more, while only 40 percent of men said they will.

The majority of summer travel, however, will be domestic. Sixty-two percent of respondents said their travels will be domestic only. Seventeen percent said their travels would be domestic and international, while 6 percent said they would only be traveling internationally. That’s just under one-quarter (23 percent) of American adults who plan to travel abroad, which represents another increase over 2022, when just 20 percent planned to travel internationally.

Younger generations are most likely to fly on a plane—a percentage that shrinks with age. Sixty-three percent of Americans in the 18 to 29 age bracket intend to fly on a plane this summer; 61 percent in the 30 to 44 age bracket; 54 percent from 45 60; and only 38 percent of adults over 60 intend to travel on a plane this summer.

Nearly four in five travelers are planning to take a road trip this summer, with distance from their home spread fairly event across various brackets. Seventeen percent will travel within 100 miles of their home, 23 percent within 250 miles and 20 percent within 500 miles, before dipping off a bit among those who will travel within 1,000 miles (11 percent) and more than 1,000 miles (7 percent).

Methodology: The survey was conducted by SurveyMonkey on behalf of The Vacationer; 1,017 Americans over the age of 18 were polled on March 1-2.
